The Consumer Electronics Show is only a few weeks away, but Samsung and LG couldn't wait to get to Las Vegas to start making announcements. Both companies have announced that they will be using CES 2014 to reveal a 105in curved Ultra HD TV.
LG was the first to play its hand, revealing the 105UB9 - it's technically the world's first curved Ultra HD TV, as well as the largest curved TV ever made. As well as being absolutely massive, with a whopping 5,120x2,160 resolution, the 105UB9 also uses a 21:9 aspect ratio. This should be much better suited to films than a standard 16:9 display, although there are surprisingly few TVs that natively support it - the last time we saw one was in 2011 when we reviewed the Philips 58PFL9955h .
Samsung quickly followed with its own announcement several hours later, with a suspiciously similar set. With the same 11 million pixel count, 5,120x2,160) resolution and 21:9 aspect ratio, the main differences between the two TVs will be in the image processing. Samsung focused on its "Quadmatic Picture Engine", which "delivers all content in UHD-level picture quality no matter what the source is" - although we'll remain sceptical until we see it in action.
Interestingly neither LG nor Samsung has opted to use OLED technology in these mammoth TVs, instead returning to LCD. Neither company is the first with a curved LCD set, as Sony revealed the S99a curved TV at IFA earlier this year, but hopefully the move will drive down prices - considering a 55in OLED TV costs almost £10,000 here in the UK, anything less would be an achievement as you'll be getting double the screen size.
Naturally there's no official word on pricing or availability just yet, but we'll be at CES in January to get a hands-on look at both TVs, so be sure to check back after the holidays for more details.
