After much thoughtful deliberation, AD is pleased to announce the winner of our Before + After Reader Home-Office showcase . The top project was selected based on creativity of the design (25 percent), room transformation (25 percent), overall aesthetic (25 percent), and the public vote (25 percent). Our editors chose the Berlin project by architects Sergei Tchoban and Nicholas Barsan of the German-based firm ST Design for its comprehensive transformation and sophisticated style.
The architects were hired to renovate a family’s recently purchased apartment in Grunewald, Germany, a residential area in western Berlin. “Our vision was to transform the 1980s post-modernist-style unit into an Art Deco pied-à-terre reminiscent of the Hollywood Regency–style apartments of the early ’40s,” Barsan says. The original space was separated into two rooms. Barsan and Tchoban removed the wall between the rooms to create a spacious home office that flows into a bedroom.
A custom-made partition—clad in stained oak on one side and an Edelman leather on the other—delineates the two areas and provides storage. Classic tailored furnishings by A. Rudin and Baker were used sparingly, keeping the office space from feeling overstuffed, while silk curtains and carpeting, by Jagtar and Tai Ping , respectively, add a subtle shimmer.
Barsan and Tchoban designed the stepped ceiling to complement the apartment’s Art Deco theme, and painted it in Farrow & Ball ’s White Tie, while the oversize pendant light from Fine Art Lamps provides the focal point of the office area. The space balances function and refinement, providing a chic justification for bringing work home more often.
