If you’re over 2020 and ready to get a jumpstart on the new year, you’re not alone. Pinterest just released its Pinterest Predicts report for 2021 , and it’s full of trends that are going to be big well into next year. Here’s what you can expect to see more of when it comes to home and decor.
Multifunctional space solutions
Homes have had to do double-,triple-, and even quadruple-duty this year, and until the pandemic is over, that’s likely to continue. Searches like “cloffice ideas” (that would be a closet office) and “bookshelf room dividers” are up 200 percent and 150 percent year over year, respectively.
Modern, minimal, and neutral
The natural vibes of Scandinavian style have been trending for quite awhile, but the most recent take is combined with Japanese minimalism. Searches for “ Japandi ” are up 100 percent year over year, and Pinterest expects to see more of this hybrid style in 2021.
Similarly, modern and minimal are seeing a rise, with “minimalist bathroom design” up 400 percent, and “modern minimalist kitchen” up 115 percent (the latter tracks with data gathered from Instagram , too).
To go with all that minimalism, color palettes are being simplified—”neutral color palette earth tones” is being searched three times as much year over year.
Vibey lighting
Not everything for 2021 is neutral. LED lighting is having a moment, especially among Gen Z, says Pinterest. Searches for “LED light room” and “neon room” are up 300 percent and 800 percent, respectively. You can get the look with classic rope lights, or go tech with smart bulbs that change color.
Kitchen shelfies
What you keep in your kitchen (and how you store it) will see some love in 2021. Pinterest reports that storage features like “plate racks” and “floating shelves” are big (up 200 and 130 percent). As for what people are putting on them, searches for “copper cookware” and “colored glassware” have increased 35 percent and 135 percent.
