While there are many reasons to visit Bali (beaches with some of the best surfing in the world; a lush interior with dramatic, mountainous jungle landscapes; an excellent design shopping scene), the Indonesian island’s sprawling resorts themselves are enough reason to draw you there. They take full advantage of the surrounding natural beauty while staying true to a Balinese sense of design. Consider the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay, for instance, situated on the southern tip of the island, just 20 minutes from the capital, Denpasar. Thirty-five acres of tropical gardens are interwoven among a collection of 147 thatched-roof villas that seamlessly blends into a hill above Jimbaran Bay, with walkways and stone-walled courtyards dripping with scarlet, magenta, and white bougainvillea.

The resort began a total redesign in January, and is now unveiling its duo of Two-Bedroom Premier Ocean Villas, the property’s most luxurious and expensive option aside from the Royal and Imperial Villas (which are undergoing renovations of their own and set to be available next year). “The resort was built 22 years ago, and we felt it was time to bring a fresh new look to the villas while still keeping the authenticity of Bali,” says Uday Rao, the hotel’s general manager.

Indonesian interior designer Jaya Ibrahim’s refresh of the nearly 4,000-square-foot villas replaced the marble flooring with stone or timber to keep the rooms aligned with a traditional Balinese home. Contemporary, locally sourced Balinese ikat and lampit fabrics were introduced for the custom-made furnishings, and the new artworks and antique Balinese doors have a toned-down color palette that feels more modern and light than before. “We went to small, remote villages on the island for inspiration, meeting with artisans to learn how to create similar features in the villas here,” says Rao. “We want guests to feel they are waking up in Bali and nowhere else.”

One thing that (thankfully) hasn’t changed? The Premier Ocean Villas’ own 30-foot infinity pool, which overlooks the shimmering waves of Jimbaran Bay. Two-Bedroom Premier Ocean Villas from $2,620/night; fourseasons.com
